Bel's Story

My Bel and I
I met Bel when I was the Student Ministries Pastor at a Haitian church here in the states.  Because there is a large Haitian population in the area we live in, the Wesleyan Church planted a Haitian/Creole speaking church.  I initially started attending the church to learn Creole for when I moved to Haiti.  My job in Haiti fell through and I was asked to come on staff at the church as the Student Ministries Pastor.

Bel and her biological siblings were my first youth members at the church.  They spoke little English when I met them, and I spoke little Creole.  I took Bel to summer camp that summer.  That is where I fell in love with her!  That is also where she started calling me Mom.  As our relationship progressed, her English got better and my Creole got better.  She is quite a great little teacher!

Through a series of unfortunate/fortunate events Bel moved in with me in January of 2010.  By March of 2010 we had finalized adoption, and I legally became her Mom.  We are a forever family and I love her so much!  She has overcome more adversities than most us could ever imagine, and she continues to thrive in school, social relationships, and life in general.  I am very proud of her.

Yes Bel is taller than me, and at times looks older than I do! lol
